Short answer. For a couple retiring at 55 in Bangalore, a ₹40,000 health-insurance premium that rises 10% a year adds about ₹30 lakh to the corpus they need: ₹3.05 crore instead of ₹2.75 crore for an 80% chance of lasting to 90. If premiums rise 13% a year it adds ₹45 lakh; a ₹80,000 premium adds ₹55 lakh. Retiring at 45, the same three cost ₹35 lakh, ₹75 lakh and ₹70 lakh. By 85 the premium is about ₹7 lakh a year, 14% of the couple's spending, up from 4% at 55.

Health cover is the expense that grows fastest in an Indian retirement. Employer group cover ends when the job does, a family floater has to be bought and renewed at retirement-age prices, and premiums rise faster than general inflation because both medical costs and your age push them up. Most retirement calculators fold health into a single inflation rate. Bhavitta models it as its own yearly cost with its own growth rate, so the tables below show what it adds on its own. Every figure is from the app's engine: 10,000 simulated market paths, in rupees.

How much does health insurance add to the corpus?

The smallest corpus, to the nearest ₹5 lakh, that lasts to 90 in at least 80% of paths for a Bangalore couple at the app's resident cost of living, by premium:

Health insuranceRetire at 55Retire at 45
None (for comparison)₹2.75 Cr₹3.25 Cr
₹40,000 a year, rising 10% (the app's default)₹3.05 Cr (+₹30L)₹3.60 Cr (+₹35L)
₹40,000 a year, rising 13%₹3.20 Cr (+₹45L)₹4.00 Cr (+₹75L)
₹80,000 a year, rising 10%₹3.30 Cr (+₹55L)₹3.95 Cr (+₹70L)

The growth rate matters as much as the starting premium. From 45, three extra points of premium growth cost more than doubling the premium, because they compound over 45 years instead of 35.

What will the premium be at 65, 75 and 85?

A ₹40,000 premium at 55, rising 10% a year, set against Bangalore's 5% general inflation:

AgePremium that yearIn today's moneyIn today's money, at 13%
55₹40,000₹40,000₹40,000
65₹1.04 lakh₹64,000₹83,000
75₹2.69 lakh₹1.01 lakh₹1.74 lakh
85₹6.98 lakh₹1.61 lakh₹3.62 lakh
90₹11.2 lakh₹2.04 lakh₹5.23 lakh

For the corpus guide's Bangalore couple, health insurance is 4% of yearly spending at 55, 8% at 70 and 14% at 85. A plan that looks comfortable at 60 can be squeezed at 80 by this one line.

Bhavitta's Compare Scenarios sheet for a Bangalore couple retiring at 55 on ₹3.05 crore: Premiums rise 10%, retire at 55, 80% success, ends ₹2.7Cr; Premiums rise 13%, no retirement age meets the benchmark yet, 76% success, ends ₹2.2Cr. Verdict: premiums rise 10% gives your money a better chance of lasting.
Three points of premium growth, in the app. The same couple on ₹3.05 crore: with premiums rising 10% a year the plan clears the 80% bar; at 13% it falls short. (Compare runs 2,000 trials, so it shows 80% and 76% where the 10,000-trial figures are 81% and 75%.)

Common questions

How much does health insurance add to my retirement corpus in India?

For a couple retiring at 55 in Bangalore, a ₹40,000 premium rising 10% a year adds about ₹30 lakh to the corpus needed for an 80% chance of lasting to 90. Retiring at 45 it adds about ₹35 lakh. Faster-rising or larger premiums add ₹45–75 lakh.

How fast do health insurance premiums rise in India?

Industry surveys put Indian medical inflation at about 10–13% a year, and premiums also step up with age bands. The app uses 10% a year by default; you can change it on the health-insurance item in your plan.

What will my health insurance premium be at 80?

A ₹40,000 premium at 55 rising 10% a year is about ₹4.3 lakh a year at 80 in that year's money, or roughly ₹1.3 lakh in today's money after 5% general inflation. At 13% a year it would be about ₹2.5 lakh in today's money.

Does employer health insurance continue after retirement?

Group cover through an employer usually ends when employment ends, so a retiree needs individual or family cover bought at their age. Buying before retirement, while still healthy, avoids fresh waiting periods on existing conditions. Check your own policy's terms.

Should health insurance be part of the retirement corpus calculation?

Yes, as its own line. A premium rising 10% a year is four times its starting size in today's money by 85; folded into 5% general inflation it would stay flat. Modelled separately, it adds ₹30–75 lakh to the corpus in these examples.
